Founded in 1969, AJCOP has matured into an association that is aware of the changes taking place in the field of Jewish Communal Service and is responsive to the changing needs of its members. While AJCOP continues to provide forums for networking and professional growth, we do so with a heightened level of sophistication and sensitivity to our members' needs, through scholarships and funding for professional conferences and development seminars, overseas travel, job placement listings and referrals, professional mentoring with more veteran colleagues, and regional meetings and conferences.  AJCOP continues to pioneer in Professional Development iniatives for its members.

The Bernard Rodkin Israel Experience Award Endowment:  The Rodkin Endowment provides an opportunity to increase one’s knowledge, experience and understanding of Israeli society and her social welfare system through participation in a 2-3 week Professional Development Experience in Israel pertinent to enhancing his/her Jewish community organization 

The Norman Edell Scholarship:  The Edell Scholarship was established in loving memory of Norman Edell, in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to the Jewish Communal Service profession in 2000 by his wife, Laura, and his sons Mark and David. The Edell Award sends one AJCOP young professional to experience the General Assembly of the United Jewish Communities for the first time, with preference given to those from a small or intermediate agency. Through this national exposure to Jewish leaders, colleagues and best practices, the Scholarship hopes to give younger professionals a clearer sense of the national system, unique opportunities for learning practice and most importantly, the motivation to continue their careers in Jewish community work.

Steve FRD Award:  Established by colleague Stephen Rose,  the Steve FRD Award will be granted on annual basis to a member in good standing of AJCOP, to provide a grant of up to $1,000 towards the costs for attending a professional enrichment conference or seminar under Jewish or non-Jewish auspices that will strengthen the professional's skills in the area of financial resource development.

AJCOP
Bernard Rodkin Israel Experience Fellowship 2008

Purpose:
To provide an opportunity to increase one's knowledge, experience and understanding of Israeli society and her social welfare system. The recipient must present a well articulated interest in participating in a 10 day Professional Development Experience in Israel that would be pertinent to enhancing his/her Jewish community organization skills, as well as, knowledge of Israeli society and its social welfare system.

Eligibility:
The Bernard Rodkin Professional Development Israel Experience Fellowship will be granted to a select number of members in good standing of AJCOP (for at least 2 years) who currently work in a Federation or National Jewish Community Organization agency (or one of its Regional offices) in the United States or Canada, who have worked professionally in the field of Jewish Communal Service for at least 3 years.

Components:
~Attendance at the United Jewish Communities General Assembly in Jerusalem in November
~Field Study with JAFI
~Field Study with JDC
~Field Study with other National Agencies

Objectives:
 • To study the social, educational, health needs and issues confronting Israel;
• To learn about the complex nature of the Israeli social service, education and health care delivery systems; including programs undertaken in Israel by various North American organizations outside of the Jewish Agency system and which may be funded by resources outside of the UIA/Canada and /or UJC systems.
• To be exposed to best-practices in project development, planning and research in regard to implementing model programs;
• To be exposed to national social policy and service delivery strategies;
• To be exposed to the role of voluntary agencies vis-à-vis the public sector and how specific voluntary agencies function;
• To learn about existing philanthropic partnerships with the Diaspora:
• To strengthen the participants Jewish knowledge.

To Apply:
1. Eligible professionals must submit an essay on how this experience may enrich and strengthen their professional competence and Jewish background.
2. The applicant must also include a letter of nomination by the executive of the agency or the lay president if applicant is an executive and a copy of their curriculum vita.
3. Recipients will be required to write a detailed article for the ProLog and/or The Journal of Jewish Communal Service, and to make a presentation to his/her agency colleagues at an AJCOP regional or national meeting.
4.  Agency must contribute $500 toward the program.

To Qualify You Must:
1. Be a Jewish Professional who has been in the field of Jewish Community Organization Practice for not more than five (5)  years.
2. Work in a Federation or national Jewish agency (or its regional offices) . 
     Preference given to those whose agency’s annual fundraising does not exceed $3 million.
3. Be a "first time" attendee at the General Assembly as a professional.
4. If a recipient is currently not a member of AJCOP, he or she will be given a one-year free membership.

How Do I Apply?
1. Submit a two page, double spaced essay on "How My Participation at the General Assembly May Enrich and Strengthen My Jewish Background and Professional Competence".
2. Application must include letter of nomination by the executive of the agency where the applicant is employed.
3. Application must include curriculum vita.

BACKGROUND:
The Steve FRD Award was established by Stephen E. Rose recently retired Associate Executive Vice President for Financial Resource Development for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. Steve has dedicated his entire professional career to financial resource development initiatives with the Jewish Federation of Greater Miami and the Miami Jewish Home & Hospital for the Aged at Douglas Gardens. In honor of his semi-retirement, he wanted to provide an opportunity for colleagues to benefit by enhancing their FRD skills.

PURPOSE:
The Steve FRD Award will be granted on annual basis to a member in good standing of AJCOP.  The award will provide a grant of up to $1,000 towards the costs for attending a professional enrichment conference or seminar under Jewish or non-Jewish auspices that will strengthen your skills in the area of financial resource development.

RECOGNITION:
The recipient will be publicly recognized at the AJCOP Annual Meeting and Awards Reception.

How Do I Apply:
Submit a two page double spaced essay on how your participation in this professional enrichment opportunity will strengthen your professional competence.

Recipients will be required to write an article for the PROLOG about their experience.

Recognition

There is no greater honor than to be recognized by your peers for outstanding contributions to the field of Jewish Communal Service.
Take a few moments and nominate a colleague or mentor 
for one of these prestigious AJCOP Awards.

The Association of Jewish Community Organization Personnel annually honors people who have, by their lives, made a significant contribution to the field of Jewish community organization practice. Selection of the award recipients is determined by a committee which reviews the nominations that have been submitted by AJCOP members. Maxyne Finkelstein  is this year's chair. Announcement of the 2008 AJCOP Awards for Distinguished Service and Retiree of the Year will be made at its annual meeting.

Mandelkorn Distinguished Service Award
The Mandelkorn Distinguished Service Award is presented to a full-time Jewish community organization professional who has been in the field for more than 10 years.

Rosichan Retiree of the Year Award
Endowed by Florence Hutner Rosichan in memory of her husband Arthur Rosichan, a long time highly respected Jewish Federation Executive, the Award is presented to a retired Jewish community professional.  The awardee should have had an outstanding career as a full-time professional, and in retirement continued involvement as a volunteer, professional, or both, or as an educator in nonprofit work, serving as a model for younger Jewish communal professionals.  Special consideration will be given to activity beneficial to the Jewish Community.


Nomination Guidelines:
These guidelines include criteria that nominators should consider as they complete the nominating forms. It is not necessary to respond in every instance.

A. Background - (factual)

1. AJCOP member in good standing? (If in doubt call AJCOP office (561) 795-4853.)
2. Professional education. When, where, achievements including degrees awarded.
3. Employment history. When, where, level of responsibility.
4. Contributions to professional knowledge and practice, by writings, speeches, participation in special seminars, etc.
5. Special honors or recognition by peers and lay leadership.
6. Extent of experience. In campaigning, planning, budgeting, community relations, endowments, other activity.
7. Outstanding job related specific achievements attributable to nominee.
8. Local and/or national Jewish community involvement other than job related.
9. General and/or national community involvement other than job related.
10. Background of nominator. Places of employment, level of responsibility, and for how long.
